Applied Anywhere
For several years, Applied Materials has offered a program designed to create a more flexible workplace - enabling employees to be more mobile and responsive to customers. Called Applied Anywhere (A2), approximately 20% of employees worldwide are enrolled and are enjoying the benefits of greater mobility.
Why is this important to Clean Tech, Applied? First A2, while not a 'work-from-home' program, has significantly reduced the commute miles for many employees all over the world. It relies on all the great technology that is available today - technology that is largely enabled by our tools and processes that customers use to create components for electronic products.
In North America alone, as a direct result of less commuting, A2 employees reduce their driving by more than a quarter million miles per month, literally stopping more than 1,500 metric tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere, the equivalent of planting >7,500 trees/year to offset the emissions.
A2 was initially modeled after flexible workplace thought leaders like Sun Microsystems. Unlike traditional "telecommuting," Applied Anywhere offers an expanded network of places where employees can work – from drop-in spaces to satellite offices and working from home, the program remains focused on enabling employees who work outside of a traditional office environment. The reduced carbon from shed office space is captured in our annual United States Environmental Protection Agency Climate Leaders inventory and more than offsets the increased energy use at home.
Through programs like A2, our employee solar rebate program, and home energy efficiency audits (available through most utilities and several non–profits like Acterra, Green@Home program) Applied and employees can take big steps in further reducing their environmental footprints.
