At Applied Materials we know that our industry’s success is dependent upon relentless innovation. This is the same for many new economy industries. Current job trends show that our next generation, must be able to think differently— to assimilate information, reframe it and create beyond the boundaries.

Newsweek article called this bright future into question. The article cites a recent study that details the steady decline of student creativity scores in the U.S. since 1990. There are many speculations on the cause, but most experts all agree on a solution that integrates creativity in the classroom.

Current research shows that the process of idea-generation can be taught, but we must make adjustments in our school curriculum to encourage innovative thinking.

In Austin, Texas, Applied has invested in a collaboration that is committed to expanding creative learning for all Austin students. Dubbed, mindPOP, the initiative gathered hundreds of arts nonprofits, teachers, and concerned community members to address four areas of focus—coordination, quality instruction, impact and equity.

Applied Materials provided seed-funding to research the issues and establish a grant fund to support projects that focus on solutions in the four areas of focus. This spring, mindPOP issued 30 mini-grants to innovative creative-learning projects.

Current projects include hosting top-quality instruction for teachers and arts providers as well as establishing a scholarship fund to provide economically disadvantaged students with private instruction in music, theatre, dance, visual arts or digital arts.

Through collaborative community efforts like these, we are moving the conversation forward and making strides to support a generation bursting with creative thought.
