In recognition of the summer solstice, the day the sun shines in the northern hemisphere for the longest period of time all year, Applied Materials’ president of Solar, Dr. Charlie Gay is hosting an “Ask Me Anything” (AMA) thread on Reddit NOW. Join us.
Dr. Solar, as he’s known in the industry, has been a proponent of solar energy since 1975 and can speak to a variety of topics including:
• The history and future of the solar industry
• Growth opportunities for the solar industry
• Methods of boosting solar productivity
• Effectively scaling solar energy
• Technologies that improve solar’s competitiveness
Join Dr. Solar on Reddit.com and ask him anything you have ever wanted to know about solar energy. He’ll be answering questions throughout the day. Additionally, we’ll publish the most popular questions of the day on the Applied Materials Blog so check back soon.
Applied Materials released its third annual solar energy survey results indicating American consumers are optimistic about solar energy technology, but overestimate the current solar power use in the U.S. In addition, we’ve created a solar energy infographic with key facts from around the world to demonstrate solar energy’s potential.

Distributed DC/DC vs micro inverters
What's you opinion on distributed DC/DC on a panel vs micro inverters? Which do you think will win out long term
Thanks, Andy
Outlook on solar concentration
Dr. Gay,
What is your opinion on today's potential for a concentrating system to lead the solar market in economy? What was your stance in the late 70's and early 80's when it was often said that PV couldn't be economical under one sun and concentrating systems were bound to prevail?
Great to see you active in discussions,
Mark
optical fiber
Good afternoon Dr. Gay.
My question is whether or not fiber optics is efficient enough to use to supply light to photovoltaics gathered by a tracking collector. And whether or not an increase in intensity would give a net increase over standard deployment.
