Celebrating the Integrated Circuit

Fifty-three years ago today, Jack Kilby demonstrated a working integrated circuit (IC). The IC, is arguably the most important invention of the 20th century. The IC made many of the technologies and devices we use possible. 

I spoke with Applied Materials chief technology officer, Om Nalamasu about the IC and its impact on the hi-tech industry. He suggested, the "IC has been one of the primary contributors in transforming industrial society to Information and knowledge based society.

Last week Applied Materials hosted solar cutomers at its Solar Technology Research & Development facility in Xi'an, China.

During the one day event, Applied Materials’ Dr. Charlie Gay sat down with China Daily to discuss the growing international solar-energy industry and what the next five years could potentially look like for China's energy market.

During his talk, Dr. Gay discussed how in the next few years China can expand its use of solar energy and reach grid parity by 2018 - two years ahead of the United States.

Applied Materials to Acquire Varian Semiconductor Equipment Associates

Applied Materials announced the signing of a definitive merger agreement under which Applied will acquire Varian for $63 per share in cash for a total price of approximately $4.9 billion on a fully-diluted basis.

The acquisition will extend Applied's leadership in wafer fabrication equipment (WFE) with the addition of the technology leader in ion implantation - a critical step in integrated circuit manufacturing.
