Dr. Russo is senior scientist and department head of Advanced Energy Technology at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He maintains his 28 year appointment at the Labs. He is the founder and scientific director of the laser material interactions group, with programs in chemistry, materials science, lasers, spectroscopy, ultrasonics, and imaging.

Dr. Russo is also president and founder of Applied Spectra, Inc. The company manufactures sensitive analytical laser spectroscopic technologies (including LIBS, LA_ICP-MS, Raman, fluorescence) for commercial, military, and security markets.
